I’m not sure hate is a strong enough word for my current vehicle, and I have heard that VW has taken a few polls and many dieselgaters responded they would buy a Golf or Jetta with the money they get for the cars they are returning. VW seems to have reduced those two models, presumably to recoup their payout money. This looks pretty damn good for someone like me that would love to get rid of their current vehicle even though it’s paid off. Just a cursory look on truecar (USAA returns even better numbers) makes me want to go test drive one or both this weekend. Thoughts? I have not written off a GTI ($21,803.00), but these are so low...

Thoughts?

Those are some seriously low prices. VW is hurting for sales. It’s true.

I am just wary of VW reliability. Always have been.

Exactly why I’m asking. Never owned one, and I know nothing about their reliability. Occasional rumblings about chasing electrical gremlins. I’d rather hear from Oppo than just the horror stories on the interwebs.

Don’t do it. Modern VWs are a PITA to work on, and the dealers charge an arm and a leg for anything they do. Here’s the list of things that went wrong before 100k miles in my VW:

Fuel Pump Failed ($8500 Lucky VW paid for it)
-took out entire fuel system
Turbo Failed (dealer quoted me $7,000 to fix it)[upgared to stage 3 turbo $2000 parts]
-Took out entire emissions system with it
ABS Module Failing ($2500 + quote to fix from Dealer)

If you work on the car yourself or if you plan on selling before the warranties up then go for it.....if not just go buy a Subaru....at least they are easy to work on and the parts are cheaper and easier to find (at least by me).

I own a 2016 Golf. It’s quirky but pretty good through the first 10k miles. Idk if it’ll make it to 100k, but I’m confident in 50k without too much work.

Also, don’t get the Jetta. Just don’t.

In college I owned a used Golf. It was a never ending merry-go-round of broken this, and worn out that. The ultimate for me was the plastic ends of the radiator breaking, not once but twice. VWs know how much money is in your bank account.

When you start buying the same OEM parts a second time, god is trying to tell you, “Buy something else fool!”

I’ve got a ‘07 gti now at 140k- it’s been the best car I’ve ever owned. In the 100k miles I’ve owned it I’ve had to replace a wheel bearing and a $40 sensor. The high pressure fuel pump failed (a somewhat common occurrence in the first gen fsi motors, since corrected in newer versions of the motor) at 118k - but vw extended the warranty on them till 120k, so it was totally covered.. (ever heard of subi doing something like that with their shit head-gaskets??)

But it’s been a GREAT car. If your budget is in the sub $20k, go find a low mileage mk6 gti with a manual. You will love it.

We have a 2010 A3 TDi (basicly a golf in a nice body)

in 130K miles, with cleaned the EGR out 3 times (dad doesnt drive with a very heavy foot, and that tends to clog it up) and I had to replace 1 $100 sensor for emissions (lol)

other then that, just regular maintenance as per the owners manual. no horror stories here.
